Carpet and Flooring Problems During the Summer

Summer vacation is in full swing and that means lots of fun in the sun, frolicking, and seasonal problems for your carpets and floors. With more trekking through the house, some new issues pop up that can surprise even the neatest homemaker. From stains to allergens, you never know what will happen next.

Here are some of our most common issues with a few solutions that may help keep you on track in the heat.

  1. Grass stains: They will be everywhere! You'll want to work on this stain immediately. Apply detergent solution, blot, and then rinse. Blot again. Apply an ammonia solution of equal parts ammonia and hot water. Blot and then apply a vinegar solution. Blot at the stain, and then rinse.

  2. Allergens: Vacuuming more often is our biggest recommendation here. Truthfully, having your carpet cleaned will reduce mite allergens in carpets by over 90% with every cleaning. Spring and summer are prime seasons for these guys. There are several other options, but the results are mixed. Make sure you at least vacuum your highest traffic areas.

  3. Crayon: Scrape off as much as possible and then use a hot iron (on the low heat setting) over a damp cloth to melt and absorb the remaining wax. Use a dry-cleaning solvent, blot at the stain, apply a detergent solution, and then rinse.

  4. Chocolate: Dry-cleaning solvent to the rescue! Scrape off as much of the chocolate as possible, sponge it off with a dry-cleaning solvent, blot, and then sponge with a detergent solution.

  5. Kool-aid stains: If you catch it early enough, club soda works wonders. Pour a generous amount onto the stain, let it fizz, blot up with a dry towel and repeat until the stain is gone. If the stain is too deep or has been there too long, consider hydrogen peroxide or undiluted lemon juice. It's very important for you to test this method on a small area first to ensure you aren't lightening the carpet as well. If that doesn't work for you, use the ammonia solution mentioned above. Spray the stain and then lay a towel over it. Go over the towel with an iron at its hottest setting. The stain will start to transfer immediately. It may take a few times to see it completely disappear. Again, try the heat setting in an inconspicuous area first as acrylic-based carpets are prone to melting.

  6. Sand: Hopefully you have a strong vacuum or one with lots of suction. Lower the height of the vacuum as low to the floor as possible and be persistent. This task will require patience and hard work. Occasionally, brushing with a stiff brush beforehand will help to get the sand grains closer to the top of the carpet.

We hope these tips help you keep on track this summer. What are some of your favorite solutions for summertime messes?
