While many of us are neat freaks about changing the sheets and cleaning the furniture regularly, many of us forget one of the most used aspects of our homes—the mattress in your bedroom.
Even if you only sleep 6 to 8 hours a night, that’s still 25 to 33% of your lifetime in this one spot. But many people think that other than flipping the mattress around, there really isn’t a lot that can be done to clean a mattress.
Well, we are here to tell you that you can, in fact, clean your mattress and here’s how!
Sometimes, through no fault of your own, a mattress can start to smell a little ripe. Maybe you are coming down off a serious bout of the flu and you’ve been sweating through the sheets. Or maybe you’ve been letting the puppies sleep at the foot of the bed and it’s starting to smell like wet dog.
Whatever the cause, a good way to get rid of odors is to sprinkle plain baking soda on the uncovered mattress. Leave this to sit for 30 to 60 minutes and then vacuum the powder back up. (In extreme cases, you can check your cleaning supply section for deodorizers specifically made to freshen up mattresses.)
Different stains require different mixtures to get them out. Here are the most common:
- Blood — Use a mixture of corn starch (1/2 cup), hydrogen peroxide (1/4 cup), and a tablespoon of salt. Let the mixture dry on the stain and then scrape it off and vacuum it up.
- Urine — Use a mixture of equal parts vinegar and water. Spray it on the stain and let it set for at least five minutes. Then, cover the area with baking soda and let this set in for at least 8 hours. Then vacuum up the powder.
- Other stains — You can either use a mixture that is equal parts water and dishwashing soap or one that is made of distilled white vinegar. Once you cover the stain, let it soak in and then use baking soda as with the other stain types.
But the best, most surefire way to clean up a mattress is to hire a professional cleaner to take care of this for you. If you already have your home’s carpets professionally cleaned at least once a year, you can talk to the company about this. Most carpets cleaning companies also offer mattress steaming that can get rid of the toughest stains and odors.
